Marie Gouverneur

Marie Gouverneur
President James Monroe
Portayed by Mrs. Catherine Hunyady Campbell

About the prettiest thing in the White House during Monroe’s administration was his daughter. This was the first White House wedding and all of Washington was absorbed with the event although only relatives and close friends were invited. Most were appeased by a large reception given later by the Monroes to honor the Marquis de Lafayette, who was personally indebted to Mrs. Monroe for saving his wife during the French Revolution.

This is one of the smallest gowns in the collection and was made in Paris of sky-blue silk taffeta. It has Empire lines and a Watteau back. There are two skirts, the outer one shirred and puffed so that the heavy embroidered underskirt will show.
